Adventures in Education, Chapter 21

First week on the job
Gr.6 tutor/substitute teacher

What I've attempted to teach:
Compare and Contrast
Author's purpose
Place values
Factoring
Potential and Kinectic Energy
Commutative and Associative Properties
Separating fact from opinion
Theme
Tone

What I've been asked to clarify:
What happened to your lip?
What's a cleft lip?
Did it hurt?
Does it hurt now?
How many surgeries did you have?
Do you remember?
Wait, can you grow a mustache?
Would that hurt?
Do people ask you about it a lot?
Oh.

Adventures in Education, Chapter 18

Preface:  Although I hate setups, this one is necessary.  A theme of this week at camp was the "Dress A Bus Contest", where campers use materials provided to decorate a bus (as you may have guessed, you smart thing you).  Our bus's theme was "Under the Sea Disco Party"--a theme that could only happen when you work with young children.  Enough ado.  As always, true story.

Friday, Summer Camp, 4:32pm
Camp Bus to Manhattan

7 y.o. Girl: "Want to hear me sing my favorite song?"
Counselor DF: "Sure."
7 y.o. Girl: "Let's have some fun, this beat is sick, I wanna take a ride on your disco stick!"
[Awkward silence]
Counselor DF: [Too afraid to say anything]
7 y.o. Girl: "We should have a disco stick on the bus for our bus party!"

Counselor DF: "Okay. How did that happen?"
Camper: "I spit on my hands."
Counselor DF: "So what did you learn?"
Camper: "If you spit on your hands, you get spit on your hands."
Counselor DF:  "Great.  Tell a friend."
Camper: [Tells a friend]
Friend: [Nods]

Adventures in Education, Chapter 16

The administration at my student teaching site asked us to create a homework packet or research project assignment for our students for the public school spring break last week.  As a part of our unit on Night by Elie Wiesel, I asked students to select one of four project options for their research on Holocaust history.

Option #3 was a series of creative writing journals detailing, with some historical accuracy, daily life in the ghetto for an "undesirable".  I apparently did not specify that I meant the Warsaw ghetto, and I am currently reading through journal entries describing life in Bushwick, Brooklyn, and Hunts Point in the Bronx.

Tomorrow's class will be featuring a "teachable moment".  I'm still learning things, too.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid, copyright Jeff Kinney

Seventh Grade ELA, 3rd Period

Student: "I have to go to the bathroom."
Teacher: "That's your central conflict, Evan."
Student: "Actually, it's more like my lower half."

Adventures in Education, Chapter 14

Today we salute you, Honey Maid graham crackers! Not only are you a delightful and delicious treat at preschools across this great nation, but you represent an activity in and of itself and a time-slot on our summer camp schedule. Sure, you are mostly made available for the campers, but when the counselors need you most, you come through in the clutch, always fresh and tasty. Forgot breakfast this morning? Not a problem! Graham crackers are an excellent source of Vitamins B1 and B2 (we have no idea what these do), not to mention 15% of your daily calcium needs or something! Low-fat graham crackers? No way, Jose. Go big or go home. You provide the flavor explosion and nutritional energy boost needed to power through those 27 minutes between snacktime and lunch. So pour yourself another lemonade, graham cracker maker people, because without your 25g of carbohydrates per serving, we'd have to put naptime on the schedule too.

Senior Counselor Dan: [Asks child to explain the problem, acknowledges child's frustration, reminds him of the inappropriateness of the F-word at camp, accepts child's apology, accompanies child back to the pool]
Lifeguard: "Thanks, Kenny. We don't talk like that here at camp. I don't really give a sh*t what you say at home, just don't do it here."

5-year-old #1: "What if we accidentally take two?"
5-y.o. #2: "What if we don't have time to find one?"
5-y.o. #3: "I have a Spider-man towel."

Adventures in Education, Chapter 6

I have learned many things during my stint as a preschool substitute teacher. Now, I know what you're thinking. And you're an asshole.

I also know what you should be thinking: what could someone with a college education possibly learn in a preschool classroom? Well, besides "Down, Over, Down some more, That's the way we make a Four", one kernel of knowledge stands out above the rest. I think you're on the verge of a similar epiphany yourself.

I LOVE dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets.

You feel me. You know what I'm talking about. Those regular old oval ones from Burger King aren't going to cut it this time. You're craving delicious, microwaved dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets just like your mom made for you when you had to go to bed early so she could host a Tupperware party. Oh yes, that's the good stuff right there.

Somehow, in all the fuss that accompanies growing up, I had left behind the scrumptious refuge of this comfort food. It took all of one minute at preschool lunchtime for me to remember what I was missing. Honestly, I've had a year-long craving for lightly breaded chicken portions shaped like a stegosaurus and reheated for 15 seconds in the microwave. If there's some honey to dip them into on the side, all the better. Who doesn't love fun dinosaur shapes? Not kids, this Tyson advertisement says here. I dream about that first bite into that slightly wet, lukewarm nugget like an athlete dreams of a championship. Like a prisoner dreams of freedom. Like Andrew Ridgeley dreams of a Wham! reunion.

Seriously, if you want to know the way to this man's heart (and I'm assuming you do and were just too shy to ask), just visit the refrigerated section of your local supermarket, right by the chicken patties and the soy-nugget alternatives, and pick me up a tray or five. I will thank you profusely.

KG#2: I didn't mean to say that she was fat! I'm really sorry!

Adventures in Education, Chapter 4

Today, Studies Center, 4:24pm

2nd Grader: Why is your writing slanted?
Me: I don't know. I guess I just write like that.
2nd Grader: Is it because your nose is slanted?

Adventures in Education, Chapter 3

The other day at work, while fetching something fetching to change into after a tragic arts-and-crafts accident, the (curiously all female) afternoon kindergarten class was walking by on their way to the playground and the following exchange went down, verbatim. Zero embellishments.

KG #1: Mister Dan!! Is that your car?
"Mr." Dan: Yeah, this is my car.
KG #2: But it's so small!
"Mr." Dan: Is it?
Miss Teacher: Well girls, Mister Dan doesn't have a wife and kids, so he doesn't need a big car.
KG #1 & 3, unison: That's sooo sad!!

Mister Dan is ready for the weekend, I think. He's going to go shower now because it was vacation week and he smells like pond.

Comeback of the Year Candidate #1

Occasion: April Vacation Station
Time: Wednesday, 1:02pm
Witnesses: 27 students, two co-workers

Me: "That's crazy talk. You're full of garbage."
Saucy 1st grader: "Your PANTS are full of garbage!"

[Exit stage left to a juvenile chorus of "ohhhh!'s]
